Important for MBBS aspirants: A high position in the NIRF Medical category does not automatically mean that every institution in the list offers a standard MBBS programme. Some, such as PGIMER, SGPGIMS and NIMHANS, are primarily known for postgraduate, super-speciality, research or specialised medical education. Students should always check the course offered before adding an institution to their admission plan.
AIIMS Delhi holds the first position in the NIRF 2025 Medical Ranking. It is widely known for medical education, research, specialised healthcare and extensive clinical exposure.
For MBBS aspirants, admission is highly competitive. Students seeking an undergraduate medical seat at AIIMS must qualify through the applicable NEET-UG admission and counselling process.
Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh ranks second. It is one of India’s leading centres for postgraduate medical education, research and advanced patient care.
However, students searching specifically for an MBBS college should note that PGIMER is not a conventional MBBS institution. This is an important distinction that general “top medical college” lists often overlook.
Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore ranks third and is one of the country’s most respected medical institutions. It is known for medical education, patient care and a strong service-oriented approach.
Students interested in CMC should carefully study its current eligibility requirements and admission rules rather than relying only on previous-year information.
Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) is ranked fourth. The institution offers undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and is known for its teaching hospital and clinical environment.
MCC conducts counselling for 100% of JIPMER’s MBBS seats, according to its stated counselling responsibilities.
Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) ranks fifth. As its name indicates, the institute has a strong focus on postgraduate and super-speciality medical education.
For a Class 12 student looking specifically for MBBS admission, this is another example of why rankings must be understood in context.
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) ranks sixth in the NIRF 2025 Medical category. Its medical education ecosystem and long-standing academic reputation make it a major choice for students exploring medical education in India.
MCC lists BHU among the institutions for which it conducts UG medical counselling.
NIMHANS ranks seventh and is internationally recognised for its work in mental health and neurosciences.
It is a highly respected medical institution, but it should not be treated as a conventional MBBS college choice. Students should match rankings with the actual course they want to pursue.
King George’s Medical University (KGMU) ranks eighth. It has a long history of medical education and operates in a large clinical environment, making it a prominent institution for students considering medical studies in Uttar Pradesh.

The NIRF Medical Ranking evaluates institutions using factors including Teaching, Learning & Resources; Research and Professional Practice; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity; and Perception. This makes the ranking a useful research tool, but it should not be the only factor behind your college choice.
For an MBBS aspirant, the practical questions are different:
A college ranked lower on a national list may still be a more realistic and suitable choice for a particular student.
Once NEET results are available, students should create a college preference list based on their rank, category, domicile, budget and counselling eligibility.
The Medical Counselling Committee handles counselling for specified categories of undergraduate medical seats, including 15% All India Quota seats and 100% MBBS seats at AIIMS and JIPMER, among other listed institutions. Students may also need to participate in the relevant state counselling process depending on the seats they are targeting.
